Gwinnett County was created on December 15, 1818, and named for Button Gwinnett, signer of the Declaration of Independence. City of Lawrenceville was incorporated and designated the county seat in 1821. The RH Allen Tannery was established in Buford as the county’s first major industry in 1868. The U.S. Congress authorized the construction of Buford Dam in Gwinnett County in 1950. The Gwinnett County Public School System is one of Georgia’s largest and fastest growing school systems in the nation. Student enrollment increases by more than 6,000 students a year. Gwinnett County also has many robust parks and recreation facilities. Walking trails, dog parks, aquatic centers and historic facilities featuring exciting amenities filled with year-round activities.
